THE OLYMPICS WERE ABOUT PEACE
And free meals. Everybody had no clothes? That’s what I was told in elementary school.
In Athens, if you won, you could get free meals at city hall for life. It was all about winning. I don’t know about sportsmanship, was it dog eat dog, or fair play prevailed?
Then as now, it’s about fame and glory. Then the victors had special status in their communities for life. Men only.
Now, peace isn’t mentioned. Then, the Olympics were all about a pause in the general hostilities, the wars, the Olympics celebrated peace. Now, The Olympics are about nationalism and a medal count. It’s secondarily, what the Greeks celebrated, individual sports excellence, observed, celebrated, and rewarded.
