THE HUMAN SPECIES
As I remember it, Classroom 3, North Yard, Soledad Prison, I played a flick, a documentary, about genetics, DNA, human species from square one.
Square one, says this look, everybody was Black, and in Africa. Moving North changed pigments and varieties, the socialized varieties of so called races.
Most of the audience was impressed with the genetic adventures described, Ancient Peoples, different types, White, Black, Oriental, etc., the hybrids, part this, part that, the human family in all its species, an interesting array of genetic development from square one, Sub Sahara Africa.
One student told me, and the rest of the room, emphatically, “I don’t believe a word of it, White people were never Black!”
This is an issue, America, that has its roots in the concept here until the Civil War, that people can own other people, they are of an inferior race. It is an enduring legacy, racism.
There is only one race today, the human race, in all of its varieties.
